Heard lots of good things about it but haven’t tuned in as I don’t think I can commit enough time to it.

TV-wise I’m working my way through series 1 of MadMen & lovin it.

Madmen is the best show on telly, second series is on BBC4 the noo.
Been meaning to get into the Wire. Haven’t seen an episode but want to tackle a boxset once I’ve finished with the last series of the Sopranos.

never heard of it. I canny watch a series unless i watch them all back to back as I lose interest. i guess thats why i prefer films.

BBC2 showing all 60 episodes 5 nights a week from Monday. Fucking love the BBC!

Very disappointing first episode. Hope it gets better.

Aye, tis a slow burner. By episode 3 you will be interested. By episode 6 you will be worse than a crack addict, dirtying up photo copied money with coffee to get the next “hit”. I sold my anal virginity for episode 9.

Watched Ep 1 and thought it was pretty good. Reminded me of NYPD Blue but more sprawling.

Got Ep 2 taped but loath to watch it as 60 hours of my life watching a cop show is not on the agenda for a fulfilling life. Plus, I’ve already squandered my Ep 9 token.

Seriously though, I ken what you mean about wasting your life watching telly. This is why I refuse to watch 24 or Sopranos. However, this is different. Watch them instead of The One Show, which I ken you watch every night. Do you no huv a PVR? Record thum and watch at your leisure.

Sorry but if The Wire is a 1 (which is seems to be) The Sorpanos is a 10. The only show which is rapidly coming close to its standard is Mad Men, probably cos the guy that writes it used to write for The Sorpranos.

I’m hooked into MadMen. Got series 1 for chrimbo and really enjoyin it, but at an average rate of 2 eps per month. That rate would see me finish watchin The Wire late on in year 2011 (assuming they do not make another series). Canny commit to that.

Think I’ll take it as I did Sopranos; if I’m watchin telly and it’s on then braw, but won’t go out my way for it.

If only there was a place which rated T.V. shows based upon the popular vote, then we could decide which show merits which mark… Oh wait there is! The IMDB.

    The Sopranos 9.5/10
    The Wire 9.7/10

That’s right 9.7 out of 10. Wow. The Wire is at least 2% better then the Sopranos

    Fair doos Roochero,
But it would be a waste of time watching random episodes from The Wire. Like reading random pages out of The Grapes of Wrath.

And on that naive basis of marking art’s success by popularity, then the best song in the world right now is Poker Face by Lady Gaga. Which, plainly, it is not.

It is a bit slow to start with. Mainly because it takes the time to develop the characters and doesn’t follow a format of leaving cliff hangers at the end of every episode, although some times it does. Characters are introduced slowly and progress naturally.

I am struggling to find a bad review of this show, if you don’t like it, you should write one!

    maverickmcp, racism is never funny.

I dunno. Look at Jade? She’s a natural treasure.

Anyway, I’m not being racist, it’s more the depiction of ghetto blacks on US telly. I just find the whole ‘don’t judge me, values are different in da hood thing tiresome’. It would be like making a series focusing on schemey tinks from Dundee, justifiying their miserable existence.

I’ve watched two episodes and I think I’m throwing in the towel. It’s too much like hard work.

Schemey tinks fae Dundee? Maverickmcp, there are plenty of people in the world who would look at our lives and find them utterly pathetic, moronic, pointless and littered with bad decisions. Imagine going to work everyday for someone else, etc etc.

Judge people, fine, it’s important to do that. But don’t judge people without knowing how and why they are in the position they are in. Otherwise, your opinions are safe, self serving and pointless.

Everyone’s opinions and actions are self-serving, Mormanski. You know that. And besides, I’ve heard all the economic argument society’s fault ‘I’m a victim’ shit. I’m just saying enthralling drama it does, for me, not make. I’d rather not willingly spend time, albeit via a drama, with society’s lowest common denominator.

  22. mormanski permalink*
    April 7, 2009

So what is society’s lowest common denominator? Is it the murderer, the junky or the dealer? Which is it maverickmcp? Or is it the poor? Just curious.

  23. Maverickmcp permalink
    April 7, 2009

    Ranked in order:

    1. Murderer
    2. Dealer
    3. Junkie

Being poor doesn’t come into it. Being poor is no excuse for any of the things above.

Anyway, I fear we have gone off at a tangent. So to summarise, I think I was saying that The Wire is not my cup of tea. I’m not really into A happens to B, which cause C, meanwhile D affects E, and E and D collide. I am into more subtle, sometimes ultimately unsatisfying but character focused drama, which is not based around a well worn cop show ‘I’m unconventional but dammit I get results’ format. Which isn’t to say The Wire is rubbish – I’ve yet to see anything from HBO which wasn’t quality – but the hour at 11.20 5 nights a week just isnae fun watching for me.

Just watch it ya bawbag or I’ll stab yer eyes. Nae excuses.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/poll/2009/jul/28/best-tv-show-noughties

    Wire – 44.7%
    Sopranos – 0.2%

  28. roochero permalink
    August 6, 2009

Are you inferring that this pole is a realistic gauge as to the merits of one show over another?

  29. mormanski permalink*
    August 6, 2009

Exactly. The Wire is 223.5 times better than Sopranos.

  30. Maverickmcp permalink
    August 6, 2009

Yeah, it’s a great poll. Top Gear is just behind The Wire. Mad Men zero. The Thick of IT zero. I take it’s because only 2 or 3 folk have filled it in? And there are all wankers. And they are all YOU Mormanski.

Sopranos is peerless. Well I thought that until recently. Mad Men runs a very close second, and in some moods, actually beats it. The Wire already looks dated with its flashy 90s style MTV generation camera work and macho posturing. It bores my cock off.

Message at the top of the poll:

‘Monday 2pm: we are aware that there has been some *ahem* multiple voting and we are investigating how to eliminate this. In the meantime, please keep voting – legitimately’

    Mormanski has been rumbled.

I’ve just conducted a poll on who looks the biggest fool on FC:

    roochero 33%
    sauzee 33%

  33. mormanski permalink*

The irregular voting does explain how Sopranos managed to scale the dizzy heights of 0.2%.

Presumably one of the Wire anoraks pushed the wrong button, mid-wank.

Whether you like The Wire or hate The Wire or don’t care about The Wire, the fact remains, you can no longer have a credible opinion about television without having seen it.

It would be akin to a mathematician discussing mathematics without bothering to learn calculus. Or a physicist calculating the orbit of the moon using only Newtons formulae and disregarding Einsteins theories. Utterly uninformed and outdated.

People on FC with credible opinions about t.v. poll.

    maverickmcp 7%
    mormanski 100%
    roochero 1%
    sauzee 11%
