Dylan

2009 April 28
by Maverickmcp

Review of gig last night here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/apr/28/bob-dylan-review

Never went near a guitar all night…. 10 of the 18 songs were from his last three albums, although none were from his current album (?)…. adopted a funny intonation during his older songs….

At least Like a Rolling Stone seems to have been alright. But knowing Dylan, Tuesday’s show could have no bearing on his Edinburgh show this week.

Unpredictability is part of the allure.

Win, lose or draw it’ll likely be the last time I see Boaby Z. Doubt much of the O2 setlist will be played… be nice to hear Tryin to get to Heaven tho.

PLayed a number of classics (Like a woman, Like a Rolling Stone, Blowin in the Wind) none of his new album, quite a view from most recent three albums prior to the last one. Pretty excellent out, stood up throughout flitting between keyboard and guitar. His playing was great, band was good. He can’t sing, obviously. But fuck it. He’s Bob Dylan. And he wrote those fucking songs.
And he played one I hadnae heard called Trying to Get To Heaven which was ace and I haven’t stopped listening to since.

Dylan seemed in good spirits, Elvis-like foot twists whilst on guitar and quite animated whilst on the keyboard. The rework of BITW was better than the original. Also, he had the coolest trews known to man (General Custer/Han Solo style).

There were dodgy points: vocals too loud in the mix, drummer was a bit too heavy and the worst version of Tangled Up In Blue imaginable (though quite funny in hindsight).

Had a braw time, would go and see him again.

I think the dude in the second from last comment heard us chatting outside. Also, wasn’t aware that it was former Orange Juice members etc busking outside.
