Stag and Dagger
I went to the Stag and Dagger music event thing last night. I was actually quite sceptical about it but in the end I enjoyed it immensely and would definitely go again. Basically, you buy a ticket and this gains you entry into numerous venues (over twenty) to see numerous bands (over 100). The London event was based in Shoreditch and all of the venues were within a 5 minute walk of each other. If you didn’t like one band you could just pop in to the next venue and dislike one there.
The first band I saw was Plugs who were on at The Vibe Bar. Didn’t really plan to go see them but they were brilliant. Their best song was probably ‘That Number’. Kind of hard to categorise them but a mixture of synth and guitar. I think they had another song called ‘Eubanks’ which was also really good. They mentioned they are having the launch of their first single tonight which annoyingly they didn’t play.
Next up was The Phantom Band in the same venue. They’re fae the Weej likes. To be honest, this wasn’t really my kind of thing and ultimately I found them pretty boring and predictable. Only stayed for a few songs though so maybe they were saving the best for last.
From there, headed to 93 Feet East to see The Twilight Sad. They’re from Scotland as well and judging from the bottle eh buckie, somewhere on the west coast. They were immense, the first three songs were great, a little bit like Idlewild or Mogwai. The crowd actually demanded an encore which prevented the next band from coming on which The Twilight Sad seemed genuinely surprised by, unfortunately their last number was pretty shit and this probably robbed them of the ovation they deserved.
Lastly, saw a band called Soy Un Caballo at The Legion. They are Belgian, the man plays lead guitar on a beautiful fender telecaster and the woman plays both the bass and the xylophone. Both of them sing and create an ethereal, twee sound which was in turns beautiful and delicate. I wouldn’t say either of them were exceptional musicians or song writers and I would imagine recordings of them wouldn’t do justice to the ‘really nice’ atmosphere they created.
On the whole, had a great night.
“They were immense… a little bit like Idlewild or Mogwai”
1. Idlewild & Mogwai dinny sound like each other
2. You dinny like either of them
3. Rumbled
Were the Belgian duo like Deus & Plastic Bertrand?
1. I didn’t say they sounded like each other, I said The Twilight Sad sounded a bit like both of them.
2. Your Mum doesn’t look like your Dad, but you look a bit like both of them.
3. Unrumbled.
like the Camden Crawl then. But no in Camden. Or a crawl.
Guid idea actually, would be good to have it in Edinburgh. Not Glasgow though. ‘Stag and Dagger’ would just take on a whole new meaning in stab-country.
The Glasgow leg is called Stab & Pagger
what does Pagger mean?
It means fight man! Did you no live in el weej?
Pagger? Made up word.
A late, largely pointless and poor quality photo of Soy Un Caballo!
Pagger though
All words are made up.
