Funny you should post this. Just been listening to his new LP on Spotty after seeing him on Wossy last night.

There’s something I dinny like about his voice & a lot that’s silly about his persona but when the records are good who gies one.

Haha. White middle-aged boys playing ‘street’. Makes me laugh. Let’s not forget J-Zed’s biggest hits were based on kids songs from show tunes. No doubt he would claim irony and subversevness. I hate to disagree with Noel Gallagher but…

The story of Jay-Z is one of very basic capitalism. Have-not hates the Haves. Becomes a Have. Fuck the Have-Nots (but exploit your past as Have-Not). Marry Beyonce. The End. V

    V depressing.

    Maverickmcp,

This could be the most idiotic comment yet posted. Let’s break it down.

Haha. White middle-aged boys playing ’street’. Makes me laugh.

Who’s ‘playing “street”‘? What does this even mean? Why is street in quotes? Are you seriously suggesting that if I like music which is produced by someone of a different skin color, age group or socio-economic background, you find it funny?

Let’s not forget J-Zed’s biggest hits were based on kids songs from show tunes. No doubt he would claim irony and subversevness.

OK, I presume you dislike the fact that people from the U.S. pronounce the letter Z as zee. Fine, but in it’s written form you are free to choose, so Jay-Z is equally valid even if you are a cultural snob. No doubt you will claim irony or subversiveness.

Jay-Z doesn’t need to claim that these songs are ironic nor subversive because they clearly are. The fact that they sample other songs is well in keeping with the finest traditions of hip hop.

The story of Jay-Z is one of very basic capitalism. Have-not hates the Haves. Becomes a Have. Fuck the Have-Nots (but exploit your past as Have-Not)

Jay-Z is extremely rich. When he couldn’t get a record deal, he started his own label. When he couldn’t get a deal to sell his clothing, he started his own clothing label. Jay-Z has made shrewd decisions to ensure the fruits of his labor go directly to him. He also campaigned for Obama, he does work for the United Nations and he gave $1 million to the Red Cross. Fuck the have-nots?

Marry Beyonce. The End. V V depressing.

Yes he did marry Beyonce, and yes this is depressing since I’m pretty sure I was next in line.

Anyway, this is a good song, it’s lyrically dense, the hook is fantastic and it’s about the greatest city on earth. What’s not to like? Perhaps your own small minded prejudice.

    Yeah I’m out that Brooklyn.
    Now I’m down in Tribeca.
    Right next to DeNiro
    But I’ll be hood forever
    I’m the new Sinatra
And since I made it here
    I can make it anywhere
