I do not think it’s hyperbolic to say that having Burt Reynolds in your film is as good as stamp of quality as any film maker or cinema goer could ask for. The man is an iconoclast.

I’ve seen it. As I recall these are the opening credits…

A room with a pool table, which has a quilt ruffled over it. A phone is ringing.

Camera gradually zooms to pool table, the ringing continues. The quilt stirs. Burt/Shamus emerges and tugs a dangling piece of rope. The rope is part of a pulley system which lowers a basket to the pool table. Inside the basket is the ringing telephone. Burt/Shamus picks up the receiver:

“Yup”

Some people say the beach landing in Saving Private Ryan is the single greatest sequence in film history… those people have not witnessed the opening credits of Shamus.

I just read a review of Shamus and in the film he doesn’t have a bed in his apartment… he sleeps on a… wait for it… a fucking pool table! Amazing.
